As a state-owned enterprise, the Central Electricity Board is under the regulatory purview of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka. Its main operations are broken into three divisions: Electricity generation, transmission and distribution. The Generation Division is responsible to operate, maintain and rehabilitate all power plants owned by the Ceylon Electricity Board. The Transmission Division is responsible for procuring and selling electricity in bulk to distribution licensees, ensuring that there is sufficient capacity from generation plans to meet reasonable forecast demand for electricity, and maintaining system transmission voltage variations. The Distribution Division is responsible for the electricity distribution in the country. Headquartered in Colombo, the CEB was founded in 1969.
