Legal Aid Commission of Sri Lanka (LAC) is the foremost amongst the various other institutions and organizations that cater to this important requirement, mainly due to its sustainability and stability.
The Mahaweli Master Plan in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka has earmarked 365,000 ha of land for development of agriculture in 13 systems identified under the Mahaweli Development Programme. It was intended to construct a series of reservoirs and hydro electricity plants and develop a large area of land with irrigation in order to facilitate the establishment of new settlements and development of agriculture. The implementation of the Mahaweli Development Programme is a mandate of the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka established in 1979 by an Act of Parliament.
The Marine Pollution Prevention Authority (MPPA), was established in 1991 under the provisions of Marine Pollution Prevention (MPP) Act No 59 of 1981. It remained under the purview of the Ministry of Port and Shipping until 1994. The Act was repealed by the Marine Pollution Prevention Act No. 35 of 2008, which took into account the growing challenges in marine pollution prevention in Sri Lanka, due to global advancements and an increase in economic development activities. The act came into effect on the 1st of January 2009 and saw the change in the name of the Authority to the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA). This act has strengthened the law enforcement capabilities of the Authority to deal with any act of marine environment pollution more effectively and efficiently.
The mediation programme is led by the Mediation Boards Commission with the policy and administrative support of the Ministry of Justice and is strengthened by mediators who volunteer their time to resolve people’s disputes. The process helps resolve all disputes referred to mediation boards by disputing parties themselves, courts of law and the police, through the process of interest based mediation in order to promote peace and encourage co-existence in Sri Lanka.
The National Science Foundation, mandated to serve and strengthen the Science and Technology sectors in Sri Lanka, performs its tasks in accordance with the functions setout in the enabling Science and Technology Development Act , No 11 of 1994 and its activities conform to the National Science & Technology Policy. Accordingly, the National Science Foundation facilitates research, development and innovation to create a knowledge economy. It also facilitates capacity building, infrastructure development, technology transfer, knowledge creation and sharing in all fields of science & technology to improve the quality of life of the people.
The prime role of formulating science and technology policy was assigned to NASTEC, which also had been assigned the task of advising the government on policies and plans for the development of science and technology, and their application in facilitating economic growth, improvement of efficiency and competitiveness of industry, agriculture and services. NASTEC was also expected to advice and assist the government in formulating policies and plans for the development of the science and technology human resource base, allocation of funds for research and its proper management, and promotion of conditions necessary for the advancement of science and technology in the country.
NYSC has been established by the Parliamentary Act No. 69 of 1979. NYSC implements many projects & programmes annually for the youth aimed at developing their creativity, artistic and cultural skills and for the improvement of technical skills, leadership qualities and also to participate volunteer programmes.
Sri Lanka Institute of Local Governance (SLILG) emerged as an institute in the background of the search for a developmental vision for Local Government in the country by catering to the requirements of capacity building in the Local Government sector. The emphasis herein was to consider Local Government as an autonomous, independent sector that could be directly linked to meet the multi faceted needs of the people through an effective, efficient service delivery. The implying characteristics in this are that, being at the grass root level, they are the best suited institutions that could meet these expectations. In pursuance of these expectations, the Parliament established the SLILG by Act No. 31 of 1999.
With the establishment of Ranaviru Seva Authority by the Act No 54 of 1999,
the requirement of a civil organization for more than two decades to carry out psycho social
rehabilitation was fulfilled. At present the Ranaviru Seva Authority is recognized as one of
the main statutory institutions which carry out community rehabilitation activities.
The RDA is the premier highway authority in the country and is responsible for the maintenance and development of the National Highway Network, comprising the Trunk (A Class) roads, Main (B Class) roads and Expressways and the planning, design and construction of new highways, bridges and expressways to augment the existing road network.
The mission of the Samurdhi Authority Sri Lanka is to contribute to accelerate the national development through empowering the people, development of human capital, promotion of livelihood activities and the development of rural infrastructure facilities and making a major contribution to create a prosperous nation, which ensures food security, eradicates poverty and assures social justice.
Social Security board of Sri lanka provides social security to self employed persons during their age and on disability. Upon death of the employee, the dependents are provided relief as per the different schemes. All the persons who are not entitled to receive pension or are not holding pensionable posts are eligible to enroll in these schemes. This helps to encourage self employed persons to continue in their respective occupations and to develop their capabilities and skills. It also improves the living standard of self employed persons generally.

Sri Lanka Press Council has become the topic of the day on several occasions during the recent past within intellectual circles referring to the Right to Information and press freedom, which created a huge social uproar fuelled by the comments of print and electronic media channels. Thus the need has arisen to outline the pathway of the Sri Lanka Press Council and its present role. Sri Lanka Press Council has been first established as a Statutory Board on 14th June 1973 as per the Regulations of the Press Council Act No 05 of 1973 under the purview of the then Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Its present Line Ministry is the Ministry of Mass Media.
The Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority has been taken over by the Ministry of Sports as a Trust fund, with effect from 01-02-1995. The bill to convert the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex in to an Authority was presented in Parliament on 20th April, 1999. The Bill was passed in the Parliament to be in force with effect from 01.09.1999 and this National Sports Complex has been established as ‘Sugathadasa National Sports Complex Authority’ from this date.

Sri Lanka Convention Bureau is the Government arm established under the Tourism Act 38 Of 2005, for the development Of the Meetings Industry in Sri Lanka. which is functioning under the Ministry of Tourism. The mission is to position Sri Lanka internationally as a unique venue for MICE activities and to receive optimum revenue from MICE tourism in order to make a positive contribution to Sri Lanka’s economy through creation of employment thereby uplifting the living standards Of those engaged directly and indirectly in the ‘MICE Industry’ in Sri Lanka.
The Land Reform Commission, which has been established under Act No 01 of 1972. The role of the Land Reform Commission are in terms of the provisions of the Land Reform Act and other policy decisions taken from time to time by the Government. The priority works of the Commission are the release of statutory determinations, payment of compensation to the owners of lands, utilisation of the lands taken over for productive investments, collection of the revenue of the Commission, ensuring the protection of lands, Staff training, and welfare.
National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) is the pioneer government institution which discharges its functions with an aim to eradicate the drug menace from Sri Lanka. In 1984, parliament enacted the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board Act No. 11 of 1984 and the board came into operation on the 9th of April 1984.
This Board was designated the principal national institution charged with the formulation and review of a national policy relating to prevention and control of the abuse of dangerous drugs and the treatment and rehabilitation of drug abusers and was given power to advise and make recommendation to the minister on such policy.
Paddy Marketing Board is a government institution established under Parliament Act No. 14 of 1971.
The mandate of the Paddy Marketing Board is,
– To carry on the business of purchasing, selling, supplying and distribution of paddy and rice;
– To carry on the business and process of milling of paddy;
– To carry on any such other business as may be incidental or conducive to the attainment of the objects referred to in paragraphs (a) and (b) above;
– To do all other things which in the opinion of the Board are necessary to facilitate the proper carrying on of its business.
The National Library also known as the National Libraries Documentation Service Board is mainly a research and a reference library and it is the main library and information centre in Sri Lanka. It intends to provide library resources as well as information to all Sri Lankans through the National Library. The library has five floors with a floor area of 11,250 sqm. and 866 meters of shelving. There are three reading areas with a seating capacity for 320 readers and several special study rooms, air conditioned auditorium with 145 seats and a conference room with 30 seats. The current library material stock of approximately over 1,000,000 volumes will form the nucleus of the future national collection.
The National Design Centre (NDC) is a statutory body established under the National Crafts Council and Allied Institutions Act No: 35 of 1982 and which commenced operations in 1983, At present the Centre functions under the State Ministry of Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products providing market-oriented designs, technology transfer programmes, consultancy services, information and research findings to the handicraft sector.
The Coconut Development Authority (CDA) of Sri Lanka is the statutory apex organization established under the provisions of the Coconut Development Act No. 46 of 1971. It is responsible to work for the development of the coconut industry in Sri Lanka and functions under the Ministry of Plantation Industries.
Sri Lanka Export Development Board (SLEDB) is Sri Lanka’s premier organisation for the development and promotion of exports, established in 1979 under the Sri Lanka Export Development Act No. 40, under the influence and guidance of the International Trade Center (ITC) and the United Nations Conference on Development of Trade & Tariffs (UNCTAD).
The National Housing Development Authority has given special attention as its prime objective to assist the communities which face housing problem throughout the island. Our institution has implemented various housing development programmes during the last three decades. Under these programmes, NHDA was able to provide permanent houses to a large number of people sland wide. These programmes were implemented under various development projects as per the requirements of those periods.
The Industrial Development Board (IDB) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Industries. It is empowered by Industrial Development Act No.36 of 1969. In terms of this Act the IDB is the premier state organization entrusted with the responsibility of development of the Industrial Sector in Sri Lanka.
As the governing body responsible for pioneering the sustainable energy revolution in Sri Lanka, we aim to facilitate the development of our nation’s rich energy resources, including solar, wind, water and bioenergy. We aim to drive strategic investments in the energy sector, which will enable Sri Lanka to transition to cleaner, sustainable and indigenously sourced energy solutions in the future. We also aim to protect our energy sources from been exploited, whilst facilitating research and development and knowledge transfers that will enable us to develop innovative energy solutions and processes to meet the nation’s requirement for sustainable energy.
National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) was established in 1999 under the provisions made available by the National Aquaculture Development Authority Act (No. 53 of 1998). It is the main state sponsored organization mandated for the task of development of the aquaculture and inland fisheries sector in Sri Lanka. Presently, it is coming under the purview of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
Tea Small Holdings Development Authority (TSHDA) was established on 1st February 1977, under the Tea Small Holdings Development Act No. 35 of 1975. Act No. 36 of 1991 to establish and register the Tea Small Holder Societies and Act No. 21 of 1997 to grant legal status to these societies have been subsequently legislated. Act No. 34 of 2003 adding amendments to the original act have been legislated.As the sole statutory body mandated for the development of tea small holdings in the country, increase of production, marketing activities, improvement of productivity and working for the welfare of the tea small holders are the objects of the organization.
The Government of Sri Lanka established the National Crafts Council by the Parliamentary Act No. 35 of 1982. Its main activities involve the promotion, development, fostering, and preservation of handicrafts, and upliftment of the social and economic status of crafts-persons.
The Galle Heritage Foundation is charged with the responsibility to promote, conserve, protect and develop Galle Fort and its historic hinterland as a historic city centre and an area of archaeological importance.
The basic powers assigned to this Authority which was established in 1978 as National Agricultural Crop Diversification and settlement Authority as per the State Agricultural Corporation Act No 11 of 1978 are as follows.
1. Agricultural Diversification Settlement Development and Management of catchment areas.
2. Conservation of environment and water resources in order to obtain the maximum productivity of the lands vested by the Authority.
3. Produce process and the sale of agricultural produce.
4. Supply of equipment and machinery maintains and operate them in agricultural diversification and settlement development.
National Food Promotion Board which simply denotes as NFPB has been incorporated by the Sri Lanka Freedom from Hunger Act No. 15 of 1973 and currently engages in the operations to promote traditional healthy foods that are free of poisonous substances through giving priority to the concept of the sustainable development in Agriculture through a local agri-economy.
Arts Council of Sri Lanka was formed in the year 1952 under constitution number 18. It was initially affiliated to the Ministry of Finance in 1952 and in 1956 it was linked with the Ministry of Cultural affairs. In 2019, September the Arts Council of Sri Lanka was affiliated to the State Ministry of National Heritage, Performing Arts and Rural Arts Promotion. The aims of the formation of the Arts Council are :
– to develop knowledge, understanding and practice of the fine arts of Sri Lanka
– to increase the accessibility of works of art to the public in Sri Lanka
– to preserve, promote and encourage the development of Sri Lankan indigenous arts and crafts
– to improve the quality and standards of arts of Sri Lanka
– to advise and co-operate with, Government departments, local authorities and other bodies on the arts of Sri Lanka
The Palmyrah Development Board (PDB) which originally came under the Ministry of Plantations was constituted by Gazette notification of 18 August 1978 published in terms of Amendment no 24 of 1975; to the Sri Lanka Coconut Development Act no 46 of 1971 to carry out all functions in relation to Palmyrah plantations. Subsequently, PDB came under the Ministry of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development by Gazette notification in 2010. Since 8th January 2015 Palmyrah Development Board assigned under the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs.
The main activities of the PDB are restoration of Palmyrah plantations, renovation and enhancement of existing model farms, conduct handicraft training programmes, production of various Palmyrah items, promotion of Palmyrah industrial products, conducting research relating to food products and other product development, and operating sales outlets called “Katpaham”.
The Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS) is an autonomous economic research organization, established by an Act of Parliament. Our mission is to conduct high-quality, independent, policy-relevant research to provide robust evidence for policymaking and improve the lives of all Sri Lankans.
NBRO is the designated national focal point for landslide risk management in Sri Lanka. Hence as its responsibilities, NBRO carries out landslide related studies, investigations, mapping, monitoring, early warning and mitigation work and in addition, provides a unique service of issuing Landslide Risk Assessment Reports as a pre-requisite for approving building permits and development plans. NBRO’s expertise extends into a wide range of disciplines such as environmental management, human settlements planning, engineering project management, geotechnical engineering, and building materials engineering also.
The ACCIMT continued to be one of a leading research and development institute in the country within the areas of its expertise and performs a pivotal role in development of national capabilities in space and several other identified core technology domains.
The functions of the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies as specified in the Act are as follows:
1. to accelerate the introduction of modern technologies to Sri Lanka by
– initiating, promoting and conducting research and development in the application of modern technologies
– providing research and development support to the Government and private sector undertakings in the application of modern technologies and
– training of personnel in modern technologies to meet the needs of the Government and private sector undertakings and to promote future studies
The areas of modern technologies include Communication and related Sciences, Information Technology, Electronics, Micro-electronics, Space Technologies, Robotics, Photonics and new materials.
NERDC was in acted by an act of parliament under Special gazette Notification (No 124/6) was published under the Industrial Corporation Act No. 49 of 1957, on 14 August 1974. The mission of NERDC is to engage in Research and Development activities to develop, acquire, adapt and transfer Engineering Technologies that would have a direct impact on the Socio Economic Development of Sri Lanka, while creating a culture within the organization to harness innovation and creativity of employees and stakeholders.
The NIFS is the only Institute in Sri Lanka which, by its Act, exists for the sole purpose of conducting research in natural and social sciences and philosophy for national development and scientific advancement. The NIFS is engaged in basic, high caliber research focusing on 16 different thematic research areas under 6 research departments. The research carried out at the NIFS is also initiated as a response to burning national problems in Sri Lanka.
Besides engaging in basic research, the NIFS popularizes science, especially among school children, trains postgraduate researchers in the country to prevent brain drain and disseminates scientific knowledge to the wider public.
National Research Council is established to assist the government to facilitate research relating to science and technology in order to build a vibrant scientific and technological community in the country, to promote and facilitate research relating to science and technology in higher educational institutions and public sector research institutes and other governmental institutes so as to develop a research base that will contribute to national needs and solicit the co-operation of the private sector in the enhancement of research relating to science and technology
The Industrial Technology Institute is a wholly owned institute of the Government of Sri Lanka and functions under the jurisdiction of the State Ministry of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development.
A statutory board incorporated on the 1st April 1998, under the Science and Technology Development Act No. 11 of 1994, the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) is the successor to the Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISIR).
The Tea Research Institute (TRI), since its inception in 1925, has been the only national body in Sri Lanka for generating and disseminating new technologies related to tea cultivation and processing. The TRI has always been the driving force behind the numerous successes achieved towards development of the Sri Lankan tea industry over the years.
Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka is the oldest research institute on rubber in the world and is the nodal agency in Sri Lanka with the statutory responsibility for research and development on all aspects of rubber cultivation and processing for the benefit of the rubber industry.
The Sugarcane Research Institute (SRI) is a statutory body established by the Act of Parliament no. 75 of 1981 (ratified on 29 December 1981), for conducting research on cultivation and processing of sugarcane to cater to technical and technological needs for the development of the sugar industry of Sri Lanka, which, until 1981 was undertaken by the Research and Development Division of the Sri Lanka Sugar Corporation (SLSC)
Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka (CRISL) is the world’s first research institute dedicated to research in coconut established in 1929. It has a team of dynamic, enthusiastic and innovative scientists, qualified technical staff, and modern analytical facilities to support research and development. Besides engaging in research, CRISL disseminates the knowledge in all aspects of coconut to the stakeholders of the industry. The Institute promotes collaborative research with other international and National Institutes and Private Sector Organizations. The Institute has eleven Research Divisions and five Service Divisions.
Over the years it has developed to be the premier national Institute in the field of socio-economic research relating to agrarian sector in Sri Lanka and has also developed the requisite skills and infrastructure for providing relevant training to farmers, field workers and managers in both state and non-state sectors. The institute also provides up to date market information to the farmers, traders and policy makers. The name of the Institute was changed to Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute in February 1995.
SLCARP serves as an organization in an advisory capacity for co-coordinating and consolidating efforts within Sri Lanka NARS, funding research projects/programmes and promoting scientific research linkages in prioritized areas both nationally and internationally. CARP has been instrumental in promoting and facilitating research, by improving and enhancing agricultural research through documentation and communicating latest advances in research to the NARS scientists.
SLCARP has identified its own perspective, plans and programs for the future in keeping with the aspirations and goals of the Ministry of Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services to meet the future challenges in enhancing domestic food production and exports focused on poverty reduction.
The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) is the principal National Institute charged with the responsibility of carrying out and coordinating research, development and management activities on the subject of Aquatic Resources in Sri Lanka. It is managed by a Board of Governors consisting partly of members appointed by the Hon. Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and also of certain Ex-officio members.
The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency Act No. 54 of 1981 established NARA in 1981. The main objective then was to face the challenges offered by the 200 nautical miles Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which Sri Lanka was endowed with, as an outcome of the third United Nations Conference on Law of the Sea.

The National Institute of Labour Studies (NILS) looks forward to be the most reputed organization in its fields of specialization in the Asia. Achieving the objective on provision of consultancy and advisory services, the institute has served several State and Corporate sector Organizations by conducting research and studies leading to completion of Corporate Plans, strategic plans, action plans, feasibility studies, financial evaluations and procedure manuals for various production and service sector organizations.
Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) is a pioneer in nano and advanced technology research in Sri Lanka. The research is primarily focused on six areas – namely; Printed Electronics and Sensors, Technical Textiles, Advanced Agriculture and Technology, Minerals and Composites, Energy, Rubbers, Plastics and Novel Polymers. SLINTEC is the first public-private research institute in Sri Lanka, and records a significant progress in being a change catalyst in the field of science for over a decade.
General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University located at Kandawala, Ratmalana, Colombo, is a university which is administered by the Ministry of Defence. KDU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (United Kingdom) and maintains necessary standards for educating and grooming Officer Cadets to meet the challenges of modern defence management. The Sri Lanka Foundation is known to be the foremost and pioneering adult education center in Sri Lanka,established in 1974 consequent to an agreement between The Sri Lanka Foundation and The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung .Today,the Sri Lanka Foundation is on a stronger footing whereby it is regularized under an act of Parliament,The Sri Lanka Foundation Law no.31 of 1973. The University of Colombo, founded in 1921, is Sri Lanka’s oldest Higher Education Institution. The University of Colombo continually strives to maintain academic excellence in all fields of study. The University is organized across 9 Faculties and 59 academic departments, along with 7 Institutes, a Campus, a School, and 20+ Centres & Units.
Located primarily in the Colombo metropolitan region, the University of Colombo is structured as a state institution which provides access to higher education across the country. The main campus is sited in the heart of Colombo, on a sprawling 50-acre estate, and comprises contemporary urban constructions as well as old colonial architecture considered national heritage sites.
The Western Campus of the University of Colombo was established by a notification of the Sri Lanka government Gazette (Extraordinary ) No 928/1 dated 20th June 1996. Its name was subsequently amended as Sri Palee Campus of the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka with effect from 11.09.1998 by an order made by the Hon. Minister of Education and Higher Education under 27(1) of the Universities Act No-16 of 1978.
It is located in the Kalutara district at Wewala, Horana on the lands and buildings donated to the University of Sri Lanka in 1976 by the board of the Sri Palee Trust set up by the late Mr. Wilmot A. Perera, a veteran politician and well-known philanthropist. It has 2 Faculties i.e the Faculty of Performing Arts and the Faculty of Mass Media.
The IHRA is one of the institutes of University of Colombo, the oldest university of the country and which falls into top 1000 universities. Being an institute, its academic activities are subject to closely scrutiny of University of Colombo, thus IHRA is bound to maintain high standards in its all-academic affairs and to continue good traditions that any higher learning institute has to preserve.

In September 2002, University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) was established by merging The Institute of Computer Technology (ICT Ordinance 1987.09.21) and The Department of Computer Science both of the University of Colombo, as the first centre of higher learning of computing in Sri Lanka. The number of students admitted to these programmes may be increased in the coming years. A total of 200 students were admitted by the three M.Sc programmes in Computer Science, Information Technology and Advanced Computing which started in the year 2002. Computer Science course modules are also conducted for first, second, third and fourth year students of the Physical and Bio Science streams of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo. The vision of the UCSC is to be a centre of international repute in training in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura formerly known as Vidyodaya Pirivena was the essence of the revival of Sri Lankan Education. The University stands strong with eight faculties, faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Technology and its latest addition Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. The University is home to over 12,000 Undergraduates, over 1000 postgraduate students. It is considered the largest University in terms of Student Population in Sri Lanka.
The University is also in the forefront of research and innovation with a research council of over 20 research centres and an Invention, Innovation and Venture Creation Council with over 50 Entrepreneurs and stakeholders with over 15 patents.
The University of Kelaniya is a public university in Sri Lanka. Just outside the municipal limits of Colombo, in the city of Kelaniya, the university has two major campuses, seven locations, six faculties and four institutions.
The University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka is an independent state university located at Katubedda, Moratuwa overlooking the picturesque Bolgoda Lake. It was established as the University of Moratuwa (UoM), Sri Lanka on 22 December 1978 under the Universities Act No.16 of 1978 and operates under the general direction of the University Grants Commission. However, its origin can be traced back to the Government Technical School (GTS) which was established in Maradana, Colombo in 1893.
The University of Jaffna is a public university in the city of Jaffna in Sri Lanka. Established in 1974 as the sixth campus of the University of Sri Lanka, it became an independent, autonomous university in 1979.
UoJ has two campuses — the main campus in Thirunelvely in Jaffna and a second campus in Vavuniya. It also has facilities in Ariviyal Nagar near Kilinochchi, Kaithady and Maruthanarmadam near Chunnakam. It has thirteen faculties (Agriculture, Alied Health Science, Applied Science, Arts, Business Studies, Engineering, Graduate Studies, Hindu Studies, Management Studies & Commerce, Medicine, Science, Technology, and Technological Studies) and thirteen other academic units/centres. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses that award various degrees.
The University of Vavuniya is a higher seat of learning and research in this region, which provides higher education in the fields of Applied Science, Business Studies and Technological Studies.
The University of Ruhuna is a public university in Matara, Sri Lanka. It is the only university in the southern region of Sri Lanka (also referred to as the Kingdom of Ruhuna). It was established by a special presidential decree on 1 September 1978 as Ruhuna University College and upgraded to a full-fledged university on 1 February 1984 by a university order. It is informally known as Ruhuna University or simply Ruhuna. The university is organized into ten faculties throughout the southern province of Sri Lanka.
The Eastern University, Sri Lanka is a public university in Vantharumoolai, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. It was established on 1 October 1986. The university was preceded by the Batticaloa University College established on 1 August 1981 which was started in the buildings of the Vantharumoolai Madya Maha Vidyalayam.
At present, the Eastern University, Sri Lanka has a main campus at Vantharumoolai, Trincomalee Campus at Trincomalee, and the Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies (SVIAS) at Kalladi, with the facilities of Library Network, Centre for Information and Communication Technology and Sports.
The South Eastern University of Sri Lanka is a public university in Oluvil in Sri Lanka. Established in 1995 as a university college, it became a full-fledged university in 1996. The campus is in Oluvil near Oluvil Harbour. The university currently has six faculties.
The Rajarata University of Sri Lanka is a public university located in the historic city of Mihintale, near Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The Rajarata University of Sri Lanka was established as the eleventh University in Sri Lanka and was opened on 31 January 1996 by President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
The Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka is a public university in Belihuloya, Balangoda, Sri Lanka. It was founded on 20 November 1991 and consists of Eight faculties.
The main purpose of the Wayamba University is to offer English-medium degrees, diploma and certificate courses (internal and external) in areas such as Agriculture, Applied Science, Management, and Technology for students and working professionals. The Wayamba University of Sri Lanka is headquartered at Kuliyapitiya, Sri Lanka.
Uva Wellassa University is a Sri Lankan national university. The university was established by government gazette effective 1 June 2005 in Badulla, Sri Lanka as the 14th national university of Sri Lanka. President Chandrika Kumaratunga established the university in 2007.
University of the Visual and Performing Arts is a public university located primarily in Colombo, Sri Lanka, specialising in art, design, fashion and the performing arts.
The Open University of Sri Lanka is a national university in Sri Lanka. It is unique within the Sri Lankan national university system for being the only university to offer programs of study leading to certificate, diploma, degrees and postgraduate degrees up to PhD level through the Open and Distance Mode of Learning (ODL).
The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR), University of Kelaniya is the prime institute for postgraduate training in archaeology in Sri Lanka. It offers postgraduate diplomas, MA, MSc, MPhil, and Ph.D. degrees in archaeology, museology, heritage, and art history. It also conducts non-degree programs in archaeology and related subjects.
The PGIE is an institute based at the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL). Currently the PGIE conducts the only Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language available in Sri Lanka. The PGIE also conducts courses in English as continuing professional education, and workshops and short courses related to English and the teaching of English. In addition, it is involved in spearheading research on English and especially English Language Teaching in Sri Lanka.
The Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo is the graduate school that provides specialist training and board certification of medical doctors in Sri Lanka. The only type of its kind, it is similar to the prestigious Royal Medical Colleges of the United Kingdom.
The Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture of the University of Peradeniya is a graduate school that provides trained scientific personnel for the agricultural sector. It was established in 1975. The institution functions as a semi-autonomous unit within the University of Peradeniya.
The Postgraduate Institute of Science is a graduate school of the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1996. The institution functions as a semi-autonomous unit within the University of Peradeniya. The PGIS offers several programmes, namely, Postgraduate Diploma, M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D
The Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (PGIPBS) of the University of Kelaniya has three Departments of Study: Buddhist Sources, Buddhist Thought, and Buddhist Culture.The Institute provides instructions for the courses of study outlined in the Master’s Degree, postgraduate certificate, and short-term programs.
The Bhiksu University was established with the intention to provide Buddhist monks a higher education institute to further their studying of Buddhism. It has two main faculties: the Faculty of Buddhist Studies and the Faculty of Languages and Cultural Studies.
The Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka is a Buddhist university in Homagama, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1981 and is organized in two faculties

The Institute of Indigenous Medicine is an affiliated institute of the University of Colombo, specialising in Ayurveda and the Sri Lankan traditional medicine. Founded as the College of Indigenous Medicine in 1929, it became part of the University of Colombo adopting its current name in 1977.
NILIS is under the University of Colombo and is a higher education institution providing degrees. Its programmes are aligned with the National standards such as the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) and National Vocational Qualifications Framework (NVQ).
The National Center for Advanced Studies is primarly involved in promoting research and advanced studies in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology is a non-profit private university in Sri Lanka specialising in technology and management. It has two campuses and four regional centres, the main campus being based in Malabe and a Metropolitan Campus in Colombo.
The Institute of Agro-Technology and Rural Sciences is a branch of the University of Colombo and was established as an Institute with a blended distance mode of teaching to provide opportunities of higher education to farming community.
The Trincomalee Campus is a part of the Eastern University of Sri Lanka. It has two main faculties: the Faculty of Communication & Business Studies and Faculty of Applied Science. From the year 2008 onwards the discipline of Siddha Medicine was also introduced as a discipline under the direct purview of the Rector of the Campus.
The Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa is an engineering college of the University of Moratuwa located in Diyagama, Sri Lanka. It awards the National Diploma in Technology.
