Sri Lanka SOE boards to decide on future direction, private capital

The Boards of directors of state-owned enterprises will decide on whether they continue or whether reforms or private capital is required, Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Harshana Suriyapperuma said.

It was not a question of whether the government should be in business or not, but the need for the government to be in a sector. Some infrastructure areas a state involvement was seen as crucual. In some areas the private sector may not be interested in investing.

“So there are multiple reasons for government to get engaged, have a share in this operating environment,” Deputy Minister Suriyapperuma told the Sri Lanka Economic Summit Organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

“However, when those segments are mature, when there are so many players and operators from the private sector, then obviously the need for government to compete may not be there.”

Competent board have been appointed to decide on the future direction of the state enterprises.
