The Sri Lanka Rūpavāhinī Corporation, also known as Jathika Rupavahini or simply as Rupavahini, is the national television network of Sri Lanka. Its operations are divided into several Divisions: Programmes, Educational Programmes, News & Current Affairs, Production Services, and Others. The Programmes Division includes the Drama Unit, the Music Unit, and other entertainment units. The Educational Programmes unit involves the Education Service Unit, which broadcasts educational programmes to support students sitting for the G.C.E (A/L), G.C.E (O/L) and Grade 5 Scholarship examinations. The News Unit aims to telecast local and international news, while the Current Affairs Unit produces programmes on current political, economic and social issues. Production Services takes the forefront in providing creative services required for all productions of the SLRC both in studio and outside locations, while the Others segment includes the Engineering, Finance and Administrative Division. The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) was created by an Act of Parliament in 1982, and is located in Colombo.
The Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation is a media institution. Its operations are divided into several services. The Sinhala National Service is the flagship national service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. The Education Service conducts seminars targeting students sitting the G.C.E. The Ceylon Fisheries Corporation is a commercial organisation involved in the production and trade of fish. The Ceylon Fisheries Corporation has five main regions: Production; State Supply; Purchasing, Sales and Distribution; and Product Marketing and Sales Promotion Division. The function of the marketing regions is to distribute and sell fish at all the retail outlets. The function of the Production segment is to purchase and supply the requirements of the marketing regions according to consumer demand. State Supply involves supplying fish to state institutions besides government hospitals. The Ceylon Fishing Harbours Corporation (CHFC) was established with the primary responsibility to deliver quality fishery-harbour related services and provide the fishing community with modern infrastructure and facilities. Its services include vessel berthing, boat lifting and other services used to aid the fishery industry and fishermen. The State Development and Construction Corp. is a State organisation that undertakes heavy civil engineering construction works, falling under the purview of the Ministry of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities. It undertakes the construction of Construction of Bridges, Roads & Highways, Dams, Irrigation structures/Schemes, Hydro Power Tunnels & Power Houses, Water Supply Treatment Works, Buildings & Jungle Clearing and Land preparations. It also manufactures pre- cast concrete products ranging prestressed concrete bridge beams, transmission poles, Concrete railway sleepers etc.. The State Development and Construction Corp was established in 1971 as a State organisation and has its headquarters in Mount-Lavinia, Dehiwala.
Milco Ltd is one of Sri Lanka’s largest dairy companies. Its principal activity is engaging in the business of collecting, processing, packing, distributing and marketing milk products. These products include pasteurised and sterilised milk, yoghurt, curd, butter, milk powder and others. It owns four factories to carry out the aforementioned processes: the Colombo Milk Factory, Ambewela Spray Dried Milk Factory, Digana Milk Factory, and the Polonnaruwa Condensed Milk Factory. This institution was established in 1956 as “The National Milk Board” under the purview of the Ministry of Agriculture. Its headquarters are in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The National Livestock Development Board is primarily involved in developing and marketing livestock and its products. Its operations are divided into three segments: Products, Farms and Bungalows. Its Products segment includes all of the milk products it produces, including fresh milk, eggs, and icecream. In its Farm segment, the NLDB is presently managing 31 livestock and crop integrated farms where livestock and coconut plantations are maintained. The Board also has a training centre at their Gal Pokuna farm to impart practical and theoretical knowledge to farmers. Its Bungalow segment offers circuit bungalows for public reservation in 9 locations all over Sri Lanka. NLDB was established in 1973, and is headquartered in Kottawa, Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka State Plantations Corp is in the business of growing, manufacturing and trading tea and rubber, managing agricultural and estate lands it has. Its operations are broken into five. First, the cultivation of crops, including tea, rubber, cardamom, cinnamon, coffee and ginger. Its Harvesting and Disposal of Timber operation involves harvesting and/or disposing matured trees. It is also involved in promoting tourism through the four holiday bungalows it owns, furnished to house local and foreign tourists. Its fourth segment is the selling of its ‘Sanstha Tea’, which is produced in the Vocational Training Centres of the SLSPC Plantations. Its fifth segment involves other activities it conducts such as leasing. With its headquarters in Colombo, the SLSPC was founded in 1958.
The Janatha Estate Development Board is responsible for the management of agricultural and estate lands owned by the Sri Lankan Government, and has two main operations: Tea and Rubber. Under its Tea segment, the JEDB owned 16 tea estates that fall into 3 groups: Galaha, Hewaheta and Nawalpitiya. The JEDB commercially sells its inhouse ‘Jana Tea’ and also supplies it to the Sri Lankan Parliament, the Central Bank, and other government stakeholders. Compost is also collected from these estates and sold commercially. The JEDB’s rubber segment produces high-quality natural latex processed products, including Sheet Rubber, Crepe Rubber and Technically Specified Rubber (TSR). The Janatha Estates Development Board was created in 1976 and is headquartered in Colombo.
The Kurunegala Plantations Ltd’s core business interests are in the cultivation, production, processing and sale of coconut, rubber and ancillary crops (such as pepper, cashew, cinnamon, dragon fruit and Mango) with a portfolio of 07 area estates covering over 4971.12 Hectares. Coconut is the main crop in all seven of its area estates, while rubber is confined to two areas. The products of these estates are then sold commercially. This plantation was incorporated in 1992 and has its headquarters in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka.
Chilaw Plantation Ltd is involved in Agri Business Management. Its operations are divided into three segments: Coconut and Inter Crop Production, Animal Husbandry, and Value Added Products. While its main crop is coconut, it also grows other inter crops such as cashew, mango, rambutan, and spices. In its animal husbandry segment, it conducts the Buffalo project, in which the fresh milk from buffaloes is used in the manufacture of curd and yoghurt, and the Sheep Project, in which sheep are bred and sold. Its Value Added segment involves the production and sale of cashews, coconut oil and Buffalo curd and yoghurt, which are sold through their Sales outlets and its Head Office, based in Chilaw. The Chilaw Plantations was founded in 1982.
Kalubowitiyana Tea Factory Ltd engages in the cultivation, manufacturing and marketing of tea. Its operations are conducted in the Kalubowitiyana CTC Tea Factory, the Derangala Tea Factory, the Hiniduma Hills Tea Factory and the Manikdewela Tea Factory. The Kalubowitiyana Factory produces CTC Teas using the “Cut, Tear and Curl” (CTC) process, whilst Derangala, Hiniduma and Manikdiwela adopt the conventional orthodox process to produce a range of leafy and small grades. Their CTC Black tea and Premium Tea are marketed and sold by the Kalubowitiyana Tea Factory to local and foreign consumers. Established in 1994, the Kalubowitiyana Tea Factory is headquartered in Pannipitiya, Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan Cashew Corporation (SLCC) is involved in the cultivation, processing and marketing of cashew and cashew products. Its operations are divided into five divisions: Marketing, Extension, Plantation, and Research. Its Marketing division involves running cashew processing centers to produce quality cashew kernels and supply value added products to local and international markets, selling cashew and allied products through SLCC sales outlets, providing cashew in bulk to hotels, local confectionary industries and airlines, as well as exporting processed cashew. Its Extension Division aims to help small scale farmers in rural areas through subsidy schemes, training and advising. The Plantation Division runs the plantations and commercial nurseries of the corporation, while the Research Division looks for ways to improve agro techniques and plant protection methods. It also worked with the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka to develop improved varieties and quality planting materials. The SLCC was established in 1973 and is headquartered in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka
Lanka Mineral Sands Ltd is involved in the business of mining, processing and exporting heavy mineral sands and their by-products. Its products include Ilmenite, Rutile, Zircon and Hi-titanium-ilmenite. With its headquarters in Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka it was established in 1957.
Lanka Phosphate Ltd’s (LPL) principal activities include excavating, processing and selling of Rock Phosphate. LPL currently produces two types of rock phosphate fertilizers: Eppawala Rock Phosphate (ERP) and High-Grade Eppawala Rock Phosphate (HERP), which are used as phosphate fertilizer for perennial crops in the country. It also has a Coconut Fertiliser mixing plant which is used as a fertiliser for perennial agricultural crops such as tea, rubber, coconut and export cash crops. Lanka Phosphate was established in 1992 and is headquartered in Colombo.
The Kahatagaha Graphite Lanka Ltd manages the Kahatagaha Mines located in North Western Province of Sri Lanka at Maduragoda, Dodangaslanda in Kurunegala District. It is involved in the mining, processing and marketing of high Carbon Natural Crystalline Vein Graphite and Natural Vein Graphite from these mines. It is headquartered in Colombo, and was established in 1992.
The Development Lotteries Board has the primary objective of creating a sustainable scheme for the generation of funds for the President’s Fund and the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund in order to contribute to poverty alleviation, educational development and other development activities. Its products include several varieties of lotteries: Saturday Fortune, Kotopathi Shanida, and others. The Development Lottery Board was founded in 1983, and its headquarters are based in Colombo.
The National Lottery Board’s main objective includes generating funds to meet the development needs of the Government through conducting Draw and Scratch lotteries. Some of these lotteries contribute to a specific cause, such as “Neeroga”, which provides funds to alleviate kidney disease in Sri Lanka, or “Govisetha”, which contributes to the Farmers Trust Fund for the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands. The State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corp is involved in the business of manufacturing, processing, stocking, packing, repacking and marketing of drugs. Its operations are divided into five segments: Production, Quality control, Formulation Research & Development, Marketing and Other Services. Its Production segment is involved in manufacturing pharmaceutical drugs and conducting initial and in-process testing of the products. The Quality Control (QC) Department is an independent internal regulatory body of the SPMC. Its overall function includes both Quality Control and monitoring of Quality assurance processes of the organisation by implementing a total quality management system and good manufacturing practices. The Formulation R&D segment is primarily involved in the development of new products and introducing them to the current manufacturing stream, and improving existing products. The Marketing segment distributes its drugs throughout its network and also abroad, to destinations including Egypt, Myanmar, Bangladesh and other countries. Other services include its Finance, Engineering and Audit departments. Established in 1987, its headquarters are in Ratmalana, Sri Lanka.
The SL Ayurvedic Drugs Corporation is the pioneer of manufacturing and marketing of Ayurvedic Drugs to the government hospitals, Ayurvedic physicians and private sector. Its operations include Production and Quality Control. Production includes producing/importing, selling and distributing Ayurvedic drugs, researching Ayurvedic drugs, raring bees and cattle for Ayurvedic drugs. Quality control involves development of specifications for standardisation of raw materials, extracts and finished products. The SL Ayurvedic Drugs Corporation was incorporated in 1969. Its Headquarters are based in Maharagama, Sri Lanka.
With the largest market share in the industry supplying pharmaceuticals to the nation, SPC’s national role is to serve Sri Lanka by providing safe, efficacious and high quality medicinal products and health services at affordable prices, while promoting the usage of generic drugs. Its services include the Procurement and Supply of Drugs, Laboratory Work, and Awareness Programmes. Its first segment involves distributing drugs to both the private sector market through an open competitive tender procedure and the general public through the State Pharmaceuticals Corp network of Rajya Osu Salas, and other distributors. Its Laboratory work includes testing the drugs, and its Awareness Programmes, which include Programmes for the general public via TV Programmes and brochures, are dedicated to educate people on proper and rational use of drugs and preventive health care. SPC was founded in 1971 and is headquartered in Colombo.
The Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital (SJGH) is a government owned, not for profit tertiary care institute. Having operated for 37 years, this multi-specialty tertiary care centre offers a comprehensive full spectrum of care, ranging from minor ailments to complex brain and heart surgeries at a substantially low cost. Its units include a General Medical Unit, Dermatology Unit, and a Cardiology Unit, amongst others. Based in Nugegoda, the SJGH was founded in 1983.
The Independent Television Network Limited (also known as ITN or simply as ITN Sri Lanka) is a Sri Lankan state governed television and radio broadcaster. It operates two TV channels (ITN and Vasantham TV) and two radio channels (Lakhanda and Vasantham FM). ITN operates in six main divisions. The Bank of Ceylon is a fully state-owned, Domestic Systemically Important Bank in Sri Lanka which offers commercial banking, investment banking and other financial services. NSB is a state-owned savings bank in Sri Lanka. It operates in four quintessential segments: Retail banking, Corporate, International Banking and Treasury. The State Mortgage and Investment Bank is one of the longest standing banks in Sri Lanka, and operates as a licensed specialised bank. The Bank is primarily involved in the housing finance and the SMEs and agriculture segment, but has been trying to expand to the manufacture and production of agricultural and industrial products. HDFC is a licensed specialised bank under the Ministry of Finance and Planning. HDFC Bank’s core focus lies in fulfilling housing based financial needs of Sri Lankans. It specialises in loans and other forms of financial assistance related to housing purposes and real estate business. Its products include housing finance, leasing, pawning, EPF backed housing loans, deposits, and Education and SME Development loan schemes. The Regional Development Bank is involved in improving the living standards of the rural masses by providing them accessible and affordable credit facilities that in turn would contribute to strengthening the rural economy. The Employees’ Trust Fund Board currently operates under the purview of the Ministry of Finance with the objective of promoting employee ownership, employee welfare and economic democracy through participation in financing and investment. The Operational areas of ETFB can be broadly divided into Collection & Employer Relations, Member Services and Investments. The Life Fund segment represents all long term insurance business related products and riders. The General Fund segment includes short term insurance related to home and travel insurances. The company was founded in 1962 and is headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The National Insurance Trust Fund Board is primarily tasked with providing all government servants general insurance schemes. It is broken down into five divisions: the ‘Agrahara’ medical insurance scheme, the Strike, Riot, Civil Commotion and Terrorism Fund, Reinsurance, Motor Insurance, and General (Non Motor) insurance. The Agrahara medical insurance scheme involves hospital charge reimbursements, surgery related reimbursements as well as natural death covers. NITF’s Reinsurance segment has its primary objective as being an extension of support to all primary insurance companies operating in Sri Lanka while ultimately retaining foreign currency within the country. The motor division of the National Insurance Trust Fund provides comprehensive and third party insurance covers to government institutions and semi-government institutions at an affordable premium. NITF’s General Insurance (Non- Motor) business is subdivided into Fire, Marine, Medical, and Miscellaneous. NIFT was established by the National Insurance Trust Fund Act, No. 28 of 2006 and is headquartered in Colombo.
The Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation (SLECIC) provides a range of facilities to ensure the financial security of Sri Lankan exporters of goods and services trading on credit terms. The SLECIC operates its products and services in two main segments: Seller’s Risk and Export Credit Guarantees.
